Villa Sofia, new suspicious death after femur fracture: report is filed

Another case of alleged medical malpractice emerged at the Villa Sofia hospital, in Palermo, after the death of Giuseppe Barbaro, which occurred in the Orthopedics department on January 6th. This time it is her children who report the death of a patient, Maria Sordano, 88 years old.

The woman, hospitalized for a femur fracture on October 15, died a week later, and the official cause was said to be atrial fibrillation and aneurysm. Her family suspects that not all the necessary measures were taken to save her.

The woman’s son, Giuseppe Sparacio, said that his mother underwent surgery for the fracture and that her condition seemed stable. However, on the night between 22 and 23 October, four days after the operation, the woman died unexpectedly. “There were no signs that predicted such a dramatic epilogue,” Sparacio said, adding that the mother had always been carefully followed. The family has appointed a consultant and is awaiting the results of the autopsy, hoping to obtain clarification on the matter, while the police have seized the medical records and the autopsy has already been performed, but the results are still awaited.
