The president of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, made a surprise visit to the Villa Sofia hospital to ascertain the situation after a report received on New Year’s Day, with the orthopaedics ward finding itself collapsing and several patients waiting for several days for an operation, given that the operating room was working at a rather reduced pace.

«Among other things – Schifani underlined to Italpress – we recorded a serious organizational shortage resulting from the absence of nursing staff in the orthopedic department which had paralyzed many operations, so much so that 14 patients were identified waiting for surgery, with a broken femur and other. We wanted to check what happens. We have clarified our ideas.”

An issue on which the president wanted to see clearly to give an important turn and sprint and above all a signal. And now there will be internal checks: «There are a complex of responsibilities naturally – added Schifani – We will work to identify the responsibilities but at the same time to solve public health problems. I wanted to see for myself and also have bilateral meetings with the operators because it is right to know, come and talk.”
